This course provides an insider's perspective into how cybersecurity and information technology (IT) managers evaluate and decide which projects warrant funding based on preliminary risk analysis. Drawing from over two decades of experience in the cybersecurity and IT domain, the instructor sheds light on the intricacies of project funding decisions. Early in their career, the instructor grappled with understanding why specific projects received funding while others did not. It became evident that it all boiled down to Risk Management by executives and managers.

Participants will grasp the terminology used by executives and managers in Risk Management discussions and learn to apply Risk Management concepts to their networks, systems, and projects. Unlike operational or tactical courses focusing on network security, this course delves into the managerial mindset, empowering students to think like managers. Mastering these concepts simplifies building a compelling business case for projects and justifying budgetary requirements.

Throughout the course, students will explore the components of Risk (assets, threats, and vulnerabilities) through numerous real-world examples. They will also cover qualitative and Quantitative Risk Measurements, demonstrating how to calculate risk due to vulnerabilities and threats.

Additionally, the course features two case studies illustrating the consequences of failed risk management: the Amazon Web Services outage and the Equifax data breach of 2017. Participants will gain insights into these incidents, understanding their causes and the decision-making processes that led to them.
